징기즈 칸의 교훈

어느날 칭기즈 칸이 사냥을 나갔다.

활과 화살을 든 부하들이 팔뚝에 매를 얹은 칭기즈 칸의 뒤를 따랏다.

매는 하늘 높이 날아올라 사람의 눈에는 보이지 앉는 것들을 볼 수 있었고, 그 어떤 화살보다 정확하고 빠른 무기였다. 그러나 그날 그들은 한마리도 건지지 못하고 실망한 채 막사로 돌아 왔다가 다시 홀로 사냥을 나섰다. 사냥으로 지치고 목이 탔지만 가뭄으로 마실 물을 찾을 수가 없었다. 그러다 마침내 기적처럼 바위를 타고 흘러내리는 작은 물줄기가 눈앞에 나타났다.

 

매를 내려놓고 은잔을 꺼내 물을 받아 입에 가져다 대는 순간 매가 날아올라 은잔을 채어 떨어뜨렸다.

칭기즈 칸은 화가 났지만 워낙 애지중지하던 짐승이었기에 아마 저도 목이 마른가보다 생각하고 잔을 들어 흙을 털어내고 다시 물을 받아 먹으려는 순간 이번에도 달려들어 물을 쏟았다.

 

화가 난 칭기즈 칸은 검을 빼어들고 한쪽 눈으로는 샘물을, 다른 쪽 눈으로는 매를 지켜보며 잔이 차오르기를 기다렸다. 그리고 물을 마시려는 순간 매가 날아올라 그에게 달려들었다. 징기즈 칸은 단칼에 매의 가슴을  내리쳤다.

 

흐르던 물줄기가 끊어져 벼랑을 기어오른 칭기즈칸의 눈앞에 놀라운 광경이 펼쳐졋다.

물 웅덩이에 독하기로 소문난 독사가 죽어 있었던 것이다.

물을 마셨다면 그도 죽었을 것이다.

 

칭기즈칸은 죽은 매를 데려와 금으로 그 형상을 뜨고 한쪽 날개에 다음의 문구를 새겼다.

 

"분노로 행한 일은 실패하기 마련이다"

 

다른 날개에는 이렇게 새겼다.

 

"설령 마음에 들지 않은 행동을 하더라도 벗은 여전히 벗이다"

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Didactics in Genghis Khan's story

 

  One day Genghis Khan went hunting.

His followers with bow and arrows accompanied him while he was walking with his falcon on his arm. The falcon can fly high and see what is not seen by human; furthermore it is more accurate and faster than any arrows. They could not hunt even one that day, so desperately came back to camp.

But he alone leaved camp for hunting again.

Tired and thirsty during hunting, he could not find water because of drought. At last, there appeared small stream of water which was falling beside the rock.

 

When Genghis Khan drank water, the falcon snapped away his silver cup.

Although Genghis Khan became angry, he thought that the falcon may also be thirsty because he valued falcon highly, and try to drink again. But the falcon again spilled the water.

 

With anger, drawing a sword, he waited until his cup was full of water while watching spring on one eye, the falcon on the other eye. Just when he was about to drink, the falcon attacked him, so he killed the falcon with his sword.

 

As a stream of water was broke off, Genghis Khan climbed the cliff.

To his surprise, astonishing scene appeared.

There was a dead poisonous snake in the pool. If Genghis Khan drank the water, he would surely die.

 

Back to the camp with his loving falcon, he shaped a golden falcon and carved in one wing.

 

"Be sure to fail when doing with anger"

 

Carved in the other wing,

 

"A friend is still a friend though he does not catch his fancy"
